TRADE: Identifying Agglomeration Shadows: Long-run Evidence from Ancient Ports; Dr Ferdinand RAUCH (University of Oxford)
Abstract
We study agglomeration shadows, areas of low economic activity around urban centres. We clarify conditions under which they emerge theoretically. We confirm their existence empirically. We show that they imply that modern cities are further apart from each other than predicted by a dartboard model.
