HCI team wins Econ Challenge

A team from Hwa Chong Institution has won this year’s National Economics and Financial Management Challenge.   This annual event, organized by the NUS Economics Society, has the aim of improving knowledge and stimulating interest in Economics and Financial Management among pre-university students.  This is the 14th year in which the event was held, with the inaugural challenge taking place in 2007.  The theme for this year’s competition was “Building A Resilient Post Covid-19 Economy.”   46 teams from 16 institutions (junior colleges, polytechnics, and international schools) took part in the competition.  The final round was held on July 25th, with Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat and NUS Vice Provost (for Student Life) Leong Ching as guests-of-honour.

The challenge consisted of three rounds which took different formats.   In the final round, the teams were required to make a presentation exploring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Singapore economy and to recommend strategies for Singapore to respond to this global crisis.  The winning team, which call themselves Flow-rishing, consisted of four students from Hwa Chong Institution:   Chen Yiming, Chia Zhi Yao, Luo Ling Ya, and their team leader, Francille Ong Si Ying.   Flow-rishing also produced a prize-winning video as part of the challenge.  The other top teams included another team from Hwa Chong Institution, two from Temasek Junior College, and one from Raffles Institution.
