In the seminar, Wenting shared about the global proliferation of social media and how social media data can be used to help make predictions in financial markets and political elections. She also discussed the social mining process that is enabled by various machine learning methods and programming tools, from acquiring data from social media platforms (e.g., Twitter) and distilling knowledge from complex and unstructured data to supporting decision-making and improving understanding of competition and customer demand.
