TS2243/GEM2026 Film Genres: Stars and Styles
Lecturer: Edna LIM
Film Genres covers a variety of film genres and styles ranging from Hollywood and Chinese cinemas to Bollywood and animation. The course traces the shifts in each genre’s defining characteristics, and students learn to analyse how generic styles and conventions vary and overlap. At the end of the course, students apply what they have learnt about genre and technique by making a film of less than 10 minutes, in which they explore particular conventions or issues related to the chosen genre(s).
All films are uploaded online. As a final assessment, students conduct an online project review of their classmates' films. This involves selecting the films that best meet certain set criteria/categories and explaining the choices.
