Single Major B.A. (Honours) in English Language and Linguistics (Cohort 2022 onwards) (CHS students)

Graduation Requirements

Pass at least 60 units of EL or EL-recognised courses which include the following:

      1. EL1101E The Nature of Language
      2. A minimum of 12 units at level-2000 from the following:
        (i)  EL2101 Structure of Sentences and Meanings
        (ii) EL2102 Sound Patterns in Language
        (iii) EL2111 Historical Variation in English
        (iv) EL2151 Social Variation in English
      3. A minimum of 36 units at level-3000 or higher, with
        (i)  a minimum of 20 units at level-4000 or higher
        (ii)  a maximum of 4 units at EL level-5000 (subject to the Department’s approval)
      4. A maximum of 8 units of EL-recognised courses

      Note:
      A maximum of 8 units from the following EL-recognised courses may be read to fulfil EL Major requirements:

Single Major B.A. (Honours) in English Language (Cohort 2016 - Cohort 2020)

Graduation Requirements

To major in English Language, students need to:

  1. Pass EL1101E The Nature of Language. This will be counted towards the Faculty Core or UE requirements.
  2. Pass at least 84 units of EL or EL-recognised courses which include the following:
    (1)  EL2101 Structure of Sentences and Meanings
    (2)  EL2102 Sound Patterns in Language
    (3)  EL2111 Historical Variation in English
    (4)  EL2151 Social Variation in English
    (5)  A minimum of 60 units at level 3000 or higher, with
    (i)  a minimum of 40 units at level 4000 or higher
    (ii) a maximum of 1 level 5000 EL course (subject to department's approval)
    (6)  A maximum of 12 units of EL-recognised courses

  1. EL1101E The Nature of Language
  2. EL2101 Structure of Sentences and Meanings
  3. EL2102 Sound Patterns in Language
  4. EL2111 Historical Variation in English
  5. EL2151 Social Variation in English
  6. A minimum of 60 units at level 3000 or higher, with
    • a minimum of 40 units at level 4000 or higher
    • a maximum of 1 level 5000 EL course (subject to department’s approval).
    Level 4000 courses count for 5 units each except the Honours Thesis which counts for 15 units.
  7. A maximum of 12 units of EL-recognised courses
