I chose Global Studies because I am not only interested in current affairs - I am very interested in people and how they act. Global Studies allows me to explore my interests by reading modules from various disciplines from psychology to political science.

I decided to specialise in Southeast Asia because I want to start my own business in the region in the future. I also feel the need to understand this region better because I have always been interested in other regions, thus neglecting my own backyard. My misconceptions occurred because of my background of being a Chinese minority in a Muslim-populated nation and I was not exposed to the rich cultures that Southeast Asia has. I will definitely explore these ASEAN countries and see how I can help to create sustainable businesses to stimulate the economies in this region.

I want to constantly improve my Mandarin speaking ability and be able to understand the impact that China has on Southeast Asia. China’s large impact on this region and my knowledge of China will help me assimilate into these foreign societies and make a life and a career for myself. Global Studies is about merging everything together, because the degree allows students to craft their major in whatever way they want through the combination of modules they choose. Therefore, even if my region is Southeast Asia, I am still able to find connections between other places and this culturally rich region. I am also interested in things outside of my theme, such as social enterprises and journalism covering conflict amongst different religions and races.
