Curriculum
Through a harmonious blend of interdisciplinary training and a sharp focus on policy issues, the Global Studies Programme has been meticulously crafted to nurture a new generation of global leaders and informed citizens. As such, our students emerge with a unique combination of expertise and innovative critical thinking, empowering them to confront the complex challenges facing humanity in the 21st century.
At its core, Global Studies draws from the rich reservoir of social science concepts and regional expertise. It focuses particularly on issues of paramount importance to public policy, delving into matters such as global financial systems and global health challenges.
Global Studies majors read a set of five compulsory courses to gain an understanding of contemporary global issues within the context of history, politics, and economics. These courses include:
- GL1101E Global Issues
- GL2101 Origins of the Modern World
- GL2102 Global Political Economy
- GL2103 Global Governance
- GL2104 Inquiry and Method/SC2101 Methods of Social Research
In addition, Global Studies majors choose one of four thematic tracks to gain depth in a particular set of issues. These themes are:
- Colonialism, Security, and Global Order
- Global Health, Environment, and Technology
- Global Political Economy
- Peoples, Cultures, and Globalisation
Students are required to have declared their choice of theme during Academic Declaration on EduRec by the fifth semester of their course of study.
In the Honours year, students apply their training in a unique and exciting two-course sequence called Task Force. Students work in teams to design and administer policy research on a topic of international or global significance. This two-module sequence culminates in a final report outlining policy recommendations on the topic they have investigated.
Through this training, a degree in Global Studies provides students the skills needed for careers in a variety of fields, such as diplomacy, civil service, international business, intergovernmental organizations, law, non-profits and non-governmental organizations, education, and other exciting fields.
