About the Course
Understanding Artificial Intelligence (AI) is crucial for social workers as it can enhance service delivery, improve client outcomes, and streamline administrative tasks. This course will empower social workers to leverage AI tools ethically and effectively, ensuring they can navigate the evolving landscape of technology in social services while maintaining human-centered care. The course will cover AI from a practitioner’s perspective, quickly bringing participants up to date and up to speed on what an AI project entails, and the current best practices, allowing them to quickly discern and design what is possible which is especially crucial in social work which has tight resource constraints.
Objectives
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Define what is Artificial Intelligence and how it came about.
- Explain briefly the different pillars of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and what they can be used for.
- Learn about different types of Machine Learning algorithms and their applications.
- Define the the different stages of an AI project and the best practices in each stage.
- State the different areas to note for an organization to move forward into Artificial Intelligence.
- Understand AI Ethics and Governance, the possibilities and the upcoming challenges.

Koo Ping Shung has 20 years of relevant experience in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. He has experience from a wide variety of industries in how data and AI is being used. His experience also spans the data value chain, from data collection, data management, and data governance to insights & machine learning model implementation.
He is an instructor, trainer, and facilitator for various institutions and the Career Conversion Program locally and has taught overseas participants. Besides conducting training, Koo is a Data Science & Artificial Intelligence advisor to businesses and startups and has mentored many individuals, professionals, and undergrads. He has spoken at numerous events such as AIMX (Hosted by SWITCH), SEMI, GITEX, and to organizations such as IRAS, BCA, CPF.

Benjamin is a policy & transformation specialist at Open Government Products (OGP), an experimental Government team building technology for public good. Previously, he was a Senior Principal MSW at Alexandra Hospital (National University Health System) with 17 years of acute hospital experience.
At NUHS, Benjamin collaborated with counterparts from NHG (National Healthcare Group), SingHealth (Singapore Health Services), and OGP to launch a national MSW care management system for public healthcare institutions, to help provide better shared care. He is now working on extending it to the social service sector while building digital capabilities in the field.
