[3-day Short Course] Family Conferencing: Managing Challenging Family Situations Involving Conflict Resolution & Mediation
About the Course
Social workers are often faced with difficult and challenging situations at short notice especially when there is impasse in family decision-making, mistrust with the healthcare system and dispute between patient and his / her family or between family members.
This module builds on the foundations laid under Family conferencing: Facilitating difficult healthcare conversations and decision-making. The focus is on building advanced skills-set to handle difficult conversations, teach the art of negotiation and mediation to resolve impasses.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Apply advanced communication skills to different communication styles, family dynamics and case scenarios.
- Gain knowledge and skills-set in family negotiation and conflict resolution.
- Gain knowledge and skills-set in family mediation skills taking into consideration current protective legislation.
Who Should Attend?
Social Workers in health and social sectors who are required to work with clients and families in making healthcare decisions.
Prerequisite
Social Workers who have completed the short course "Family Conferencing: Facilitating Difficult Healthcare Conversations and Decision-Making" or have a minimum of 4 years social work experience preferred.

Dr Goh is the pioneer social worker in the area of geriatric social work. She makes her contribution as a practitioner, researcher, innovation in service delivery, educator and advocate. She is a firm believer of our unique model of joint responsibility of individual, family, community and government in elder care. An advocate for integrated care services and support for families she spearheaded the home care coordinators in CGH in 2001, which evolved into the ACTion team under Agency of Integrated Care and later Neighbours under the Hospital to Home pro-gramme. Dr Goh also holds appointments in committees in social service agencies and the ministries.

Adj Asst Professor, DProf, RSW, FAPA is a Clinical Supervisor (Satir), Fellow of the American Psychotherapy Association (USA) Registered Social Worker & Member of the International Workgroup of Death, Dying & Bereavement. Gilbert’s professional doctorate is in Social Work & Futures Studies. He has extensive experience as a medical social worker, having worked in both general and tertiary hospitals. Gilbert is currently a Master Medical Social Worker with the National Cancer Centre Singapore. His clinical interest is in grief work and bereavement, experiential counselling and group work, particularly in the application of experiential counselling of patients with advanced cancers. His research interests include the study of coping behaviours, meaning-making and intervention models in cancer care.

Ms Goh holds a Master degree in Social Work from National University of Singapore. She joined Changi General Hospital as a Medical Social Worker in 1999. She has vast experience in providing psychosocial care for patients and families from different disciplines in both inpatient and ambulatory settings in the hospital. Her clinical interest lies in critical care and trauma work. She is active in capacity building of the department's new MSWs by helming a learning platform for them. She is also the department's student field placement coordinator. Her current portfolio involves transformation and innovation projects that aim to improve patient care delivery.

Ms Cerene Wong has obtained her Masters of Social Sciences (Behavioural Health) from The University of Hong Kong. Cerene has amassed a wealth of experience in critical care and trauma. She works closely with her patients which entails the provision of psycho-emotional and practical support to them and their families in the high stress environment of Intensive Care Units. Another of her significant work in critical care, is the management of families of potential cadaveric organ donors.
Having the passion and keen interest with adult education and continuing learning, Cerene is currently holding a Clinical Educator role, where she is active in delivering education activities, trainings, facilitation, and curriculum development. She is also responsible for mentoring and supervising the juniors in the team, and undertakes as a field supervisor for social work students in undergraduate programme from local and overseas universities.
