Thesis Title: The Remonetization of Socialist China's Economy: The Case of Monetary and Wage Reform in Beijing and Tianjin in the Mid-1950s (tentative)

Thesis Research Area:
Taking the monetary and wage reforms of Beijing and Tianjin in the mid-1950s as a local case study, this paper examines how the People’s Republic of China emerged from the economic disorder left by the hyperinflation of the 1940s. In an economy marked by collapsing confidence in money and widespread reliance on barter and payment in kind, how did the new state persuade people to use money again and gradually replace in-kind distribution with monetary wages? Conceptualizing this process as the “remonetization” of the economy, this study explores how the state rebuilt monetary order and transformed a controlled monetary system into an important foundation for economic planning.
