Honours Programme

Chinese Studies and Chinese Language are offered as two separate specialisations. The B.A. Honours programme in Chinese Studies is available to students who have read either Chinese Studies or Chinese Language as their single major or first major. Students will graduate with a B.A. Honours in Chinese Studies.

Chinese Studies

Chinese Studies (CH) Single Major [B.A. (Hons)] (Cohort 2021 Onwards)

Pass at least 60 units of CH or CH-recognised courses which include the following:

  1. CH1101E
  2. CH2121
  3. CH2141
  4. CH2161
  5. CL2101
  6. CL3104
  7. CH2162 or CH2221 or CH2243 or CH2252
  8. a minimum of 36 units at level-3000 (including CL3104) or higher (see Note 1), with
    a) a minimum of 20 units at level-4000 or higher (see Note 1)
  9. a maximum of 8 units (in total) of the following:
    a) CH-recognised courses (excluding CL2101 and CL3104)
    b) CH courses that are taught in English (see Note 2)

Note 1: Students are allowed to read a maximum of 2 level-5000 courses, subject to department’s approval.
Note 2: CH course codes with 3rd-digit '9' are taught in English.


Chinese Studies (CH) Single Major [B.A. (Hons)] (Cohort 2016 to 2020)

I. Pass CH1101E. This will be counted towards the Faculty Core or UE requirements.
II. Pass at least 84 units of CH or CH-recognised courses which include the following:

  1. CH2121
  2. CH2141
  3. CH2161
  4. CL2101
  5. CL2104 or CL3104
  6. CH2162 or CH2221 or CH2243 or CH2252
  7. a minimum of 60 units at level-3000 or higher (see note 1), with
    a) a minimum of 40 units at level-4000 or higher (see note 1)
  8. a maximum of 9 units (in total) of the following:
    a) CH-recognised courses (excluding CL2101, CL2104 and CL3104)
    b) CH courses that are taught in English (see note 2)

Note 1: Students are allowed to read a maximum of 2 level-5000 courses, subject to department’s approval.
Note 2: CH course codes with 3rd-digit '9' are taught in English.

The Honours programme is expected to be completed within 4 academic years. Each academic year consists of two regular semesters and two optional Special Terms. Students can enrich their learning experience by spending a semester on student exchange or internship. Besides this, local/overseas fieldtrips are organized for a practical approach to the curriculum.


To Note (Cohort 2016 to 2020)

  1. Students are allowed to read a maximum of 2 level-5000 courses, subject to department’s approval.
  2. CH and CL course codes with 3rd-digit '9' are taught in English.
  3. To declare an Honours track, students must have completed 110 units, including 44 units in the Major, with a GPA of 3.20 and above. Honours Thesis/Project (15 units) is optional. To qualify for the Honours Thesis/Project, students must be on the Honours Track with a minimum GPA of 3.50.
  4. Students who do not attempt the Honours Thesis / Project will read level-4000 or level-5000 courses to fulfil the Honours Requirements.
  5. Students may also read a level-4000 Independent Study Course (5 units). The level-4000 Independent Study Course carries a prerequisite of 100 units completed, including 44 units in the Major, with a minimum GPA of 3.20. It precludes the Honours Thesis / Project.
  6. All level-4000 courses carry a general prerequisite of having completed 80 units, including 28 units in the Major, with a minimum GPA of 3.20 OR being on the Honours Track (some level-4000 courses may have different prerequisites).

*All department courses can be taken as electives by students from other departments/programmes. Not all department courses are necessarily offered in any given academic year.
