Thesis Title: Translation and Chineseness: A History of the Localization of Confucian Culture among the Straits-Born Chinese, 1815-1918 (Tentative)

I intend to explore how English-educated Chinese intellectuals in the Straits Settlement attempted to construct their unique "Chineseness" through the translation of Confucian classics.
