Thesis Title: The transition of the concept 'Shizheng' (pragmatic governance) in Late Imperial China (Tentative)
In the sixth year of the Daoguang reign, the Ming dynasty official Lv Kun was enshrined in the Confucian Temple for his contribution to 'Statecraft Learning' in the temple's list of honorees. However, the Ming Dynasty had seen a significant number of officials renowned for their statecraft learning, what set Lv Kun apart from them? This study attempts to examine the spread and transition of Lv Kun's concept of "pragmatic governance" over the years. By doing so, this study aims to explore the shifts in understanding of "pragmatic governance" and "statecraft learning" among different groups from the late Ming Dynasty to the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty. This exploration sheds light on the changing intellectual climate within the context of the so-called "Statecraft Learning," as well as the evolving social changes.
