Thesis Title: Inventing “Modern Sichuan”: Local Literary Perspectives from the Xinhai Revolution to the Eve of the Anti-Japanese War

Thesis Research Area:
This thesis examines Sichuan literature from the Xinhai Revolution to the eve of the full-scale Anti-Japanese War, exploring how modern literature participated in the production of the meaning of “Sichuan” as a locality. This thesis understands literature as a productive cultural practice and examines how literary writing organized local experiences, shaped local memories, constructed identities, and reconfigured Sichuan’s relationship with the nation, the frontier, and the outside world, thereby enabling “Sichuan” to gradually become a cultural locality that could be collectively imagined, understood, and discussed.
