Thesis Title: Menstruation, Consumption, and Poverty: A Social History of Chinese Women’s Sanitary Products (1925-1949)
Thesis Research Area:
Starting from the perspectives of content production, channels of dissemination, and consumer groups related to women’s sanitary products, this study examines how menstruation—once regarded as a private or even taboo bodily experience, or interpreted through the pathological framework of traditional Chinese medicine—gradually entered the relatively public arena of mass media in modern China. My research analyzes how women’s bodily experiences and images were emphasized or concealed within the context of a consumer society.
