The modernity of classical poetry in the late Qin and early Republic of China
Introduction:
A native of Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, I chose to study old-style poetry because of my fondness for classical Chinese literature, and to focus on the neglected works of Qing loyalist poets in the Republican period because of my interest in the concept of modernity. With my research, I hope I can make some contributions to the broadening of the existing framework of literary history.

Thesis Title: Metaphors and Reconstructions of early republican society by the Tongkuang School of Poetry (Tentative)
Taking the poets of the Tongguang School of the late Qing Dynasty as the object of my study, I try to explore how this group of poets, each with similar literary interests, reconstructed in their poems the literary community of the early Republic of China, in which the imperial system had collapsed. By examining their practice of Chinese poetry, I ask if traditional culture still maintained its vitality in modern China, to what extent did these poets fail or succeed in their endeavour to inject elements of modernity into their work through the use of metaphorical devices? Is there an unbridgeable gap between traditional practice and modern experience? How did the Tongguang poets respond to this tension?
