Thesis Title: Self-feeling and the Public Identity: Yu Yue's Writing for Chaos and Traumatic Memory (tentative)
Thesis Research Area:
Yu Yue (俞樾) was a prominent Confucian scholar in the late Qing dynasty. His writings, which span various genres, offer different perspectives and narratives—even when addressing the same historical events. I approach his work from the angle of chaos writing, focusing on the question: Why do gaps exist among these texts? Ultimately, my research investigates how a group of orthodox scholars, represented by Yu Yue, sought to construct an ideal society during the late Qing period. This topic intersects with broader issues such as the readership of different literary genres, identity politics, and the sociopolitical function of scholarly discourse.
