Second Major
For students from Cohort 2026 onwards, Chinese Languages and Cultures (CL) and Chinese Studies (Bilingual) (CH) are offered as two separate specialisations. Students with any other suitable first major may second major in Chinese Languages and Cultures or Chinese Studies (Bilingual) by fulfilling the requirements on this page.
For students from Cohort 2025 or earlier, Chinese Studies and Chinese Language are offered as two separate specialisations in the B.A. programme. The B.A. Honours programme in Chinese Studies is available to students who have read either Chinese Studies or Chinese Language as a single major or first major. Students majoring in other departments may second major in Chinese Studies or Chinese Language by fulfilling the requirements on this page.
Up to 16 units (40% of the unit requirements for a Second Major) may be double counted and used to meet (i) the Second Major requirement and (ii) another requirement, e.g., General Education (only for students admitted from AY2021/2022 onwards), College (e.g., Common Curriculum), Faculty, Major, Second Major, Minor, Specialisation or other requirement, i.e., at least 24 units of the Second Major must be distinct and not overlapping.
Chinese Languages and Cultures (CL) Second Major (Cohort 2026 Onwards)
Pass at least 40 units of CL or CL-recognised courses which include the following:
- CL1101E
- CL2110
- CL2111
- CL2120
- CL2130
- CL3110
- CL2211 or CL2221 or CL2231 or CL2240 or CL3312
- a minimum of 16 units at level-3000 (including CL3110 and CL3312) or higher (see Note 1)
- a maximum of 8 units of CL-recognised courses
Note 1: Students are allowed to read level-4000 courses, subject to department’s approval.
