It was an honor to have Dr Wu Gaofeng as a presenter in one of our Master of Economics (ME) Seminar Series. Dr Wu Gaofeng is a Senior Data Scientist at the Analytics Centre of Excellence in DBS Bank, where he drives advanced analytics applications across multiple financial product lines. Gaofeng received his PhD in computer engineering from NUS in 2015. Prior to joining DBS, Gaofeng was a Senior Manager in Lazada directing voucher-recommendation projects using machine learning and mathematical optimisation algorithms. He also has experience in workforce scheduling solutions for healthcare institutions and retailers.

In the seminar, Gaofeng provided a taxonomy of machine learning algorithms and gave an overview of the lifecycle of data science projects. He then used the “motivations first and solutions second” approach to share three use cases in e-commerce: free shipping, logistics workforce rostering, and recommender systems.
