Working in the Financial Sector

Dear Students, 

We hear you. From the feedback of previous Alumni Sharing Events, many of you are keen to gain insights into the job opportunities available in the financial markets. Thus, we are delighted to have two alumni guest speakers to share their work experiences in this highly competitive sector. They are: Mr. Nicholas Chia (Class of 2017), a FX and Macro Strategist, and Mr. Benjamin Lau (Class of 2020), a Relationship Manager.

Nicholas Chia (Class of 2017) started his career in macro research with Centennial Asia before moving to Standard Chartered bank as a FX and Macro Strategist, covering both the G10 and EM Asia markets. His favourite pastime at work is to think about where market consensus is wrong on macro and political outcomes. As someone passionate in Emerging Asia, he has picked up Bahasa Indonesia, is learning Japanese and intends to start on Hindi soon.

Benjamin Lau (Class of 2020) is a Relationship Manager (International Clients) at Standard Chartered. Prior to joining Standard Chartered, he has worked at Schroders Wealth Management as an Assistant Relationship Manager and at the Credit Ratings and Research Division of Moody’s Investors Service. He is currently the Chairperson of the Youth Wing EXCO at the Economic Society of Singapore. As a student, he served as the President of NUS Economics Society.

  1. How did you get your job? What could be the reasons you were hired?
  2. Which courses/activities that you took/participated at NUS that were useful and relevant in helping you secure the job?
  3. What is your job designation? What is your job scope? Which department are you in, and what segment of the market are you serving/ supporting?
  4. What do you do on a normal workday? Explain your job tasks.
  5. Who do you interact with in the organization, and why?
  6. Why and how do you interact with clients or external parties (if applicable)?
  7. What are the challenges faced so far, as an employee? How do you overcome these?
  8. What is your projected career path? What do you need to do to move to the next level?
  9. What do you think are important qualities and skill-set needed to succeed in this job and other aspects of life in the private sector?
  10. Highlight some tips for the undergraduates on getting a job relevant to your industry.
