Internship
GL3550 Global Studies Internship
Internships vary in length but all take place within an organisation, are vetted and approved by the Convenor of the Global Studies Programme or his/her representative, have relevance to the major in Global Studies, involve the application of subject knowledge and theory in reflection upon the work, and are assessed.
Available credited internships (if any) will be advertised at the beginning of each semester. In exceptional cases, internships proposed by students may be approved by the Programme.
Pre-requisites for students
- completed a minimum of 24 MC in Global Studies including GL1101E and one of the following Core Modules GL2101, GL2102, GL2103; and
- declared Global Studies as their Major.
Procedures for Application and other Information
(Must be completed before start of internship)
- Submit letter of offer from prospective internship employer. Letter should indicate total number of hours of internship.
- Responsibility of the student to look for a supervisor in the workplace who agrees to undertake the role to coordinate with the NUS internship supervisor.
- Responsibility of the student to sources for an NUS supervisor who is willing to grade the student’s performance and submission
- In addition, we require students with the internship module to submit a mid-term report (40%) and a 3,000 word final assignment (60%) for grading by the department’s supervisor.
- The module will be graded.
- Workload Hours: a minimum of 120 hours, accumulated during one period working for a single organisation.
- An internship with a minimum of 240 hours working in the organisation may earn 8 MCs. Of these 4 MCs will be credited to the Major, and 4 MCs to the Unrestricted Elective components respectively.
- The supervising faculty has the discretion to set deadlines for the midterm report and final report. A speedy completion of written work after the end of the internship is encouraged. As this is a graded module, all grades must be submitted by the general end-of-semester deadline at the latest.
- All internship applications must be submitted 2 weeks prior to the start of a new semester. Any applications thereafter will not be accepted by the department.
