Workshop on Conceptualising Labour Regimes and Global Production

Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in the theorisation of labour regimes in economic geography, critical development studies and employment relations. Labour regimes are seen as historically formed, multi-scalar phenomena resulting from the articulation of struggles over local social relations, often intersecting with the commercial demands of lead-firms in globalised production networks and with the gendered and racialized politics of social reproduction. This two day closed workshop was designed to develop and deepen debate on the current scope and potential of labour regime analysis for understanding dynamics of global production in contemporary capitalism. It stemmed from existing individual and collective work among several of the participants that has explicitly sought to theorise labour regimes or labour control regimes. This workshop was jointly organised by GPN@NUS Centre with Centre of Labour and Global Production of Queen Mary University of London. This workshop was held from 7-8 January 2019 at Anomalous Space, United Kingdom.

Workshop on ‘Emerging Production Networks of Fintech’

Fintech, a shorthand for ‘financial technology’, brings together firms and actors from the finance industry and technology and innovation clusters in changing the ways that capital raising, financial transactions and investment decisions are being made, often through the use of big data, online platforms and mobile technologies. Initiated and organised by GPN@NUS, the workshop will provide valuable intellectual space for critical discussion on key research topics, conceptual themes, methods, and intellectual and policy implications for understanding changing geographies of production and finance.

Hong Kong Workshop co-organised by GPN@NUS with City University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Baptist University

The GPN@NUS Centre co-organized a joint workshop with Dr He Wang (City University of Hong Kong) and A/P Chun Yang (Hong Kong Baptist University) that was held on 8-9 June 2017 at the City University of Hong Kong. This workshop focused on the role of Asia in global production networks. Some 18 scholars from Canada, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, the UK, and the US presented their work at the workshop. Six members of the GPN@NUS Centre were amongst these presenters. The key issues discussed during this intensive workshop included the rise of Asian firms in several key industries (finance, computers, and automotive), labour and upgrading in global production networks, R&D activities in Asian economies, and marketing and logistics in global production networks. Most of the workshop participants also went on a local field trip to visit Henry’s former secondary school in Hong Kong – Diocesan Boy’s School – and were warmly welcome by the school’s principal and vice principal.
