This seminar provides an overview of key concepts and theories of cultural competence and diversity in counselling and social work. Using vignettes and case examples based on practice, this seminar highlights the need for cultural competence and diversity in working with clients in Singapore. Suggestions are made to apply some of these concepts and frameworks/models systematically in Singapore, where we can be exemplary in promoting cultural competence and diversity in business, counselling, political studies, and definitely social work.

Associate Professor Timothy Sim has been based in Hong Kong for more than 18 years. He is a leading international scholar in social work practice research, family therapy, and disaster management. After returning to Singapore since the end of 2020, Tim has focused on developing counselling and family therapy training at the Singapore University of Social Sciences. He is committed to contextualising services that reach out to families that are experiencing addictions, divorce, incarceration, poverty, and violence.

Dr Chua Wei Bin has more than 18 years of management experience in various non-profit settings, ranging from both social services to health care settings. He is also a trained social worker and family therapist who is adept in working with families and individuals facing various challenges. His current area of interest is looking at ways in which medical and social care could be integrated to promote better continuum of care.
