About
Collecting data from children can be challenging as they may not have always have sufficient language and attention span to clearly articulate their needs, thoughts and feelings.
This course provides an introduction to diverse data collection methods that have been tried and tested by researchers to elicit and document data from children. These methods range from traditional ethnographic observation and interview to visual-based methods and those involving props. How these methods can be used will be explained in the context of social service-related studies that have employed them in their research design.
Participants will gain insights into the affordances and limitations of the methods. Tips for conducting research with children will also be shared.
Trainer
Dr Seah Lay Hoon is a Senior Research Fellow at the Social Service Research Centre (SSR), NUS. She received her postgraduate diploma in Education from the National Institute of Education (NIE) and her masters and Ph.D. in Science Education from the University of Melbourne, Australia. Her research work entails the use of qualitative methods and analysis such as interviews, ethnographic observations, researcher-practitioner collaborative inquiry, thematic analysis, discourse analysis and applied linguistic analysis.
Course Fee
This course is SSG-approved. Participants who are Singaporeans or Singaporean Permanent Residents will be eligible for subsidies of 70% of the course fees, excluding GST. Singaporean participants who are aged 40 years old and above will be eligible for higher subsidies of up to 90% of course fees. Participants must record at least 75% attendance, and pass all assessment components, to be eligible for SSG funding. The table below shows the breakdown of the course fee payable.
GST is increased from 8% to 9% in 2024.
