About

Mediating Effects of Parental Stress on Harsh Parenting And Parent-child Relationship During Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic in Singapore | Gerard Chung

Abstract: Because of “Circuit-breaker" (CB), parents faced increased parenting stress. The study aims to understand how parents’ perceived impact of COVID-19 increased harsh parenting and reduced parent-child relationship closeness through the mediating effects of parenting stress. Online survey data were collected from 258 parents during CB. We used two scales: (a) Impact of COVID-19 and (b) Parental Stress Scale. Outcomes included parent-child relationship closeness and harsh parenting. Results indicated that the impact of COVID-19 increased parenting stress. This, in turn, has an impact on parenting by reducing parent-child relationship closeness and increasing the use of harsh parenting. Given that these are risk factors for potential child abuse, supporting parents and mitigating the impact of COVID-19 are important.

Mental Wellness during the Circuit Breaker and Help-Seeking Behaviours | Ryan Tan

Abstract: The Circuit Breaker (CB) measures were unprecedented in Singapore in the fight against the global Covid-19 pandemic. A brief anonymous community survey administered by Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) aimed to collect information regarding the impact of the CB on mental health and well-being as well as understanding attitudes toward help-seeking behaviours and preferences within the community. In general, ratings for all negative emotions increased while ratings for positive emotions decreased during the CB. Respondents with a pre-existing mental health condition reported more difficulty coping during the CB period. While on the whole most respondents will approach their friends for help, about 23% of students surveyed would consider not approaching anyone for help.
