Seminar Details
School-based social and emotional learning (SEL) has accumulated substantial evidence as a promising universal preventive and promotive intervention for youth around the world. In real-world settings, however, the success of SEL largely depends on its implementation quality. While the field has recognized the importance of teachers’ own social-emotional competence (SEC) in effective SEL delivery and student outcomes, empirical research on teacher SEC and its impact remains limited, particularly in East Asian school contexts. Dr. Lee will share recent research findings, including the development and validation of a multidimensional scale to assess East Asian teachers’ SEC, and how teacher SEC relates to teacher well-being, SEL instruction quality, classroom climate, and student SEC growth. These findings offer practical implications for targeted SEL interventions for teachers, ultimately supporting high-quality SEL implementation and student development.

Juyeon Lee, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at the University of Hong Kong and Director of the SELASIA+ research lab. Dr. Lee’s research centers on universal prevention and promotion of youth mental and behavioral health through school-based social and emotional learning (SEL). She aims to generate rigorous and practical evidence to make SEL more effective, equitable, and sustainable in real-world settings across diverse educational contexts. Dr. Lee is a CASEL Weissberg Scholar (2025-27 Cohort) and an expert panel member for the OECD Survey on Social and Emotional Skills (Round 3). She holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Welfare from Seoul National University and a PhD in Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Jungup Lee is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work and Co-Director of Social Service Research Centre at the National University of Singapore. Her research seeks to refine the understanding of how adverse childhood events relate to subsequent behavioural and mental health outcomes for children and adolescents. Specifically, Dr. Lee’s research focuses on identifying multi-level risk and protective factors (e.g., family, peer, school, and community levels) that shape various patterns of externalizing and internalizing behaviours to facilitate the development of more effective intervention strategies for social workers providing services to children, adolescents, and young adults. Her research interests include cyberbullying, school violence and safety, child maltreatment, online harassment, technology-facilitated sexual misconduct, juvenile justice, and youth mental health and digital well-being.
