About the Course
This hands-on course equips social service practitioners with practical skills to deploy and use large language models (LLMS). Participants will learn how LLMs work and their capabilities, explore current and potential applications in the social service sector, and develop prompt engineering skills needed to effectively use LLMs. The course also covers topics such as ethical usage and critical evaluation of LLM outputs. Participants will also work on practical scenarios to apply skills and knowledge to use LLMs to enhance their social service work.
Objectives
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand how LLMs work and their characteristics (including strengths and limitations)
- Consider the potential applications of LLMs to social work context (e.g., assessment, evaluation, planning, intervention, publicity etc)
- Set up and operate LLMs locally on their personal devices using open-source tools
- Apply prompt engineering techniques to elicit accurate, relevant, and high-quality responses from LLMs that align with social work practice and knowledge
- Critically assess LLM outputs and exercise evaluative judgment when incorporating them into their work based on professional guidelines and organizational/sector guidelines.
- Apply acquired skills and knowledge to relevant social service tasks through hands-on practice
- Identify specific use cases from their own practice context and to apply skills and knowledge to use LLMs to improve practice

Gerard Chung
Assistant Professor,
NUS Department of Social Work
Gerard Chung is an Assistant Professor of Department of Social Work at the National University of Singapore, researching on technology and AI in social work. He graduated with a PhD in social work from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He accomplished his postdoctoral at A*STAR and at the Social Service Research Centre, National University of Singapore. Before academia, Gerard practiced as a social worker at Fei Yue Family Service Centre. He is excited about researching and using Large Language Models (LLMs) to develop various tools to support social work training and practice.
