About the Course
This is a foundational module in mental health targeted for social workers after their first year of practice. It covers basic knowledge in common mental health problems to facilitate social workers to screen clients for management and escalation to the next level of care. The module also imparts social workers with the knowledge and skills to conduct a screening of client’s basic mental state and case formulation using the Integrated Illness Causation Model.
Objectives
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Screen clients for common mental health conditions for holistic social work case and care planning.
- Screen client's mental state.
- Apply the Integrated Illness Causation Model in social work assessment to facilitate case planning for persons with mental health problems.
- Take appropriate actions to escalate cases with complex mental health issues and right-site clients to appropriate specialist mental health services.
Who Should Attend
Social Workers after their 1st year of clinical experience*.
*Much of the content in this course have been covered in the undergraduate elective module on 'Mental Health and Mental Illness' conducted by the Department of Social Work, NUS.

About the Instructors
Ms Siti Adilah Rahiman
Principal Medical Social Worker,
Institute of Mental Health
Siti Adilah is a Principal Medical Social Worker in the Institute of Mental Health.
As a Team Lead, she presently oversees a team of Medical Social Workers in forensic psychiatry. The team works closely with offenders who have been diagnosed with mental health conditions or suspected to have mental health issues, across inpatient and outpatient settings. With her prior experience in working with the community mental health team, Siti Adilah has extensive experience in conducting risk assessments and crisis interventions and managing complex cases in the hospital and community.
Siti Adilah has been actively conducting talks, presentations and trainings on mental health topics to external organizations and institutions. In addition to providing supervision to fieldwork educators, Siti Adilah was involved in the teaching of undergraduates at the university and the past review of its mental health curriculum.
Ms Joanne Chen
Senior Medical Social Worker,
Institute of Mental Health
Joanne is a senior medical social worker with IMH. She has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Social Work, Diploma in Counselling and Advanced Certificate in Learning Performance (ACLP) with the Adult Learning Institute.
Joanne has served patients with mental health conditions in IMH for a decade. She has worked extensively with the multi-disciplinary team in forensic rehabilitative psychiatry, where she served offenders and chronic in-patients with addiction and mental health problems.
Currently, Joanne works largely in the outpatient context, conducting complex case management and counselling using a systemic approach. Joanne is involved in the training of young social workers in the department. In 2023, she reviewed a mental health curriculum and participated in the teaching for students at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Joanne has been involved in Continuing Professional Education Programme with NUS since 2022.
