The Minor in Language Studies is an Open Minor.

Undergraduate students from cohort 2020 and before should read CLS Level-4000 courses with the HM suffix (for example, LAJ4201HM) worth 5 units per course. Undergraduate students from cohort 2021 onwards should read CLS L4000 courses without the HM suffix (for example, LAJ4201) worth 4 units per course.

2017 and 2018 Cohorts (Pre-CHS) 2019 and 2020 Cohorts (Pre-CHS) 2021 Cohort and onwards (CHS)
Overview Requirements To earn a Minor in Language Studies, students must accumulate 24 units, made up of

· either 16 units* (i.e., at least 4 courses) from courses of the same language plus 8 units from recognised courses from that language track, or

· 20 units* from the same language plus 4 units from a recognised course, or

· 24 units* from the same language.

*The language courses must be either, (i) read from NUS or (ii) successfully mapped courses from exchange programmes (up to 8 units only) with course codes that are identical to CLS courses.

To ensure that students who graduate with a Minor in Language Studies attain an advanced level of competency in the language, students must ensure a 6th or higher-level language course must be included. The offer of a 6th or higher-level language course is subject to the discretion of CLS.

To earn a Minor in Language Studies, students must accumulate 20 units, made up of,

· either 16 units* (i.e., at least 4 courses) from courses of the same language plus 4 units from recognised courses from that language track, or

· 20 units* from the same language

The accumulated units must include a 6th or higher-level language course (to ensure that all students graduating with a Language Studies Minor attain at least an advanced level of competency). Please note that the offer of a 6th or higher-level language course is subject to the discretion of CLS.

*The language courses must be either, (i) read from NUS or (ii) successfully mapped courses from exchange programmes (up to 8 units only) with course codes that are identical to CLS courses.

 

 

Important Notes (i) In order to take Level 1000 CLS language courses, the student must not have prior knowledge of the language (written/oral).

(ii) Students with prior knowledge and who are placed directly in any one of the following language courses will not be able to meet the 20 units requirements.

Students with such advanced prior knowledge in one language are strongly encouraged to work towards a Minor in another language offered by CLS instead.

Continuing Professional Education (CPE) initiative

Under the CPE initiative, graduating students who have completed ONLY some of the course requirements before graduation, may return to read the sixth and higher-level courses. 

The course could be stacked to the courses that were completed in undergraduate programme requirements to obtain a “Specialist Certificate”.

(i) In order to take Level 1000 CLS language courses, the student must not have prior knowledge of the language (written/oral).

(ii) Students with prior knowledge and who are placed directly in any one of the following language courses will not be able to meet the 16 units requirements.

The two highest Japanese language courses are Level 4000 courses, and just below them are three equivalent-level (i.e., 6th level) courses that do not preclude each other.

They are, namely, LAJ3202 Japanese 6, LAJ3204 Business Japanese 2 and LAJ3205 Media Japanese (“6th level language courses”). Therefore, it is still possible for a student placed directly in any 6th level language course to meet the requirements.

Example:

A student with prior knowledge of Japanese placed directly in a 6th level language will have to complete:

- EITHER all three 6th level language courses, or both Level 4000 language courses plus one recognised non-language course of 4 units;

- OR all three 6th level language courses, and one Level 4000 language course plus two recognised non-language courses of 4 units;

- OR any two 6th level language courses, and both Level 4000 language courses plus one recognised non-language course of 4 units

 

Minor in Japanese Language Studies

Students who declare the Minor in Japanese Language Studies can choose one of the following options:

1. 5 CLS language courses of the Japanese language, including the sixth level Japanese language course or higher, or

2. 4 CLS language courses of the Japanese language, including the sixth level Japanese language course or higher, AND 1 Recognized Course for this Minor.
