ALLEN XIAO

I am an urban and cultural geographer having done ethnographic research in Lagos, Nigeria-the largest metropolis in sub-Saharan Africa- as well as on African diaspora in Asia. Drawing from my background in human geography, cultural anthropology, African studies, and urban studies, my research interests broadly involve how urban subjectivity is shaped at the nexus of identification processes, mobility experiences, and transnational and regional linkages. After joining NUS Geography in January 2023, I am open to gradually develop my research on urbanism that bridges Asia and Africa, with particular attention paid to topics in social and cultural geographies.
