Research Fellow

Dr. Utkarsh is a research fellow in the Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore (NUS), specializing in land–atmosphere physical exchange processes. He obtained his Ph.D. (2015–2020) in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology (Program: ESPM, Division of Environment & Sustainability) from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). During his doctoral studies, he worked on-site in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) at Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA, and the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill, USA, where he developed the Urban Asymmetric Convective Model (UACM), a computationally efficient multilayer urban canopy model within the WRF modeling framework. This work aimed to improve the representation of urban meteorological processes, including wind fields, atmospheric vertical structure, and the urban heat island (UHI) effect in large cities.

Under the RCA project (Aug 2023–Oct 2025), he worked with the Centre for Climate Research Singapore (CCRS) on the development and evaluation of the 100-m uSINGV, a customized version of the UK Met Office (UKMO) Unified Model (UM), for high-resolution simulation of extreme rainfall and wind events over Singapore. Currently (Nov 2025–present), he is working on the WSRP project under CAWRAS, in collaboration with CCRS and UKMO, focusing on the development of a multilayer urban–JULES land surface model for coupling with the UM and the next-generation LFRic modeling system. His research aims to improve the representation of urban land–atmosphere interactions and enhance the prediction of extreme weather events in Singapore, contributing to more accurate weather forecasting and greater climate resilience in the region.
