CLaSIC 2020 - The Ninth CLS International Conference

After deciding the postponement of CLaSIC 2020 for one year due to COVID-19, we have been closely monitoring the development of the situation in Singapore and around the world.  However, with the continuing uncertainty, we have come to the realization that CLaSIC 2020 cannot take place in the way we originally intended. Thus, we have made the difficult decision to cancel CLaSIC 2020. On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to thank all of you for your support and encouragement.

The next CLaSIC will take place virtually on 1 - 3 December 2022.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDUCATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY:
REVIEW, RE-CONCEPTUALISE AND RE-ALIGN

SINGAPORE, 2-4 DECEMBER 2021

CLaSIC 2020

Welcome Message

Yuzuru Hamasaki

Dear colleagues and friends,

On behalf of the organizing committee, I am delighted to invite you to the 9th CLS International Conference CLaSIC 2020 to be held at the National University of Singapore from 2nd to 4th December 2021. CLaSIC 2020 was originally scheduled to be held from 3rd to 5th Dec 2020. In light of worldwide effect of COVID-19, we decided the postponement of the conference to 2021. In Singapore, we encountered several hundred cases of infection daily during the period of April-May 2020 and the government placed strict circuit-breaker measurements. Since then, the number of infection was successfully contained to a single digit by October and the circuit-breaker measurements have been relaxed. Currently Singapore government is preparing for the re-opening of the country.  Rescheduling the conference is on our part to ensure that all interested individuals can make their travel plan to join us in Singapore. We really hope to see many of you in CLaSIC2020.

The theme of the conference will be Foreign Language Education in the 21st Century: Review, Re-conceptualise and Re-align.

We are honoured to have the following academics as our keynote speakers:

About the Theme

Foreign Language Education in the 21st Century: Review, Re-conceptualise and Re-align

When the past millennium came to close, much has been debated about what skills need to be acquired in this globalised, technologically-advanced, and fast-changing world compared to the traditional model of learning as accumulating knowledge. Concepts of “21st Century Skills” have been proposed by many organisations and stake-holders. For example, Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21) identified 3R (Reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic) and 7C skills (Critical Thinking and Problem-solving, Creativity and Innovation, Collaboration, Teamwork, and Leadership, Cross-cultural Understanding, Communication and Media Fluency, Computing and ICT Fluency, and Career and Learning Self-reliance) as a framework for the skills. Two decades have elapsed since the beginning of the 21st century, and perhaps it is now time to review, re-conceptualise, and re-align our understanding of roles of “Foreign Language Education” in the 21st Century. CLaSIC 2020 provides a platform for researchers, scholars and practitioners in foreign language education to discuss the following questions. What are the skills to be acquired through foreign language education? What are the roles of foreign language teachers and learners? How should culture be incorporated in foreign language education? How has multilingualism contributed to the understanding of language acquisition process? How can technologies enhance language learning? What type of collaboration can we build with the communities? What impact can disruptive pedagogy give to foreign language education? What additional aspects are required to develop curriculum and materials? How can we assess and evaluate new skills and competencies? How can we support teachers’ development? What are tools and methodologies to contribute to our better understanding on foreign language education? In CLaSIC 2020, we hope to engage in an invigorating discourse on theoretical conceptions and approaches, research insights, and practical experiences from the various sub-fields and sub-themes.
