Graduate Research Workshop
The annual Geography Graduate Research Workshop marks the cumulation of the Graduate Research Seminar (GRS) module, a common course for all first-year Masters and PhD candidates. It is an excellent opportunity for graduate students to hone their presentation skills, obtain constructively critical feedback for their proposed research projects, and make their research interests known to the wider research community.
2026: Changes, Ecologies and Digitalities
The Graduate Research Workshop, held on April 24, 2026 brought together a diverse group of graduate students and faculty members from diverse academic and national backgrounds. The workshop’s theme, “Changes, Ecologies and Digitalities” evoked the common ethos across diverse subdisciplines to bridge conversations and spark collaborations. During session breaks, presenters also had the chance to continue engaging with attendees, colleagues and faculty members.
The Workshop was thematically structured in three clusters:
Each cluster consisted of three to six presentations, each followed by an enriching Question and Answer session. The thematic clusters were designed to be fluid and inclusive, encouraging all graduate researchers to explore their research from different perspectives and engage with constructive feedback.
The day-long workshop started with an opening address by Prof. Petra Tschakert, and closed with remarks by Assoc Prof. Lin Weiqiang, the lecturer of the Graduate Research Seminar. Faculty and graduate researchers also had the opportunity to engage with each other through a lunchtime networking activity. Together, the Graduate Research Workshop was a success in creating synergies among the variegated subfields of geography and bringing together the Department’s research community.
