History Requirements
Single Major [B.A. (Hons)]
Pass at least 60 units of HY courses or HY-recognised courses which include the following:
- HY1101E
- HY2259 The Craft of History
- a minimum of 36 units at Level-3000 or higher, with a minimum of 20 units at Level-4000 or higher*
- a maximum of 8 units of HY-recognised courses
- a maximum of 4 units at Level-5000 (with department permission)
* Students who wish to read more than 20 units of Level-4000 courses must seek department approval
To major in History, students need to:
- Pass HY1101E. This will be counted towards the Faculty Core or UE requirements.
- Pass at least 84 units of HY modules or HY-recognised modules which include the following:
- (1) HY2259 The Craft of History
- (2) a minimum of 60 units at Level-3000 or higher, with a minimum of 40 units at Level-4000 or higher
- (3) a maximum of two Level-5000 courses (subject to departmental approval)
- (4) a maximum of 22 units of HY-recognised courses
- (i) a maximum of 10 unite at Level-4000.
Notes:
- Students who wish to read more than 40 units of Level-4000 courses must seek departmental approval.
- To qualify for Honours track, students must have completed 110 units, including 44 units in the Major, with a GPA of 3.20 and above.
- The Honours Thesis/Project (15 units) is optional. To qualify for the Honours Thesis/Project, students must complete 110 units including 44 units of HY major requirements with a minimum SJAP of 4.00 and a GPA of 3.50. Students may seek a waiver of the SJAP pre-requisite from the department if they have a minimum GPA of 4.25 after completing 110 units.
- Students who do not attempt the Honours Thesis/Project will read Level-4000 courses to fulfil the Honours Requirements.
- Students may also read a Level-4000 Independent Studies Module (5 MCs). This Level-4000 ISM carries a prerequisite of 100 units completed, including 44 units in the Major, with a minimum GPA of 3.20. It precludes the Honours Thesis/Project.
- All Level-4000 courses carry a general prerequisite of having completed 80 units, including 28 units in the Major, with a minimum GPA of 3.20 OR being on the Honours Track (some Level-4000 courses may have different prerequisites).
For USP History Honours Students: USP History Honours students may NOT do USP ISMs at the 4000-level. However students on the NUS-ANU JDP program can do two ISMs at level 4000 either at ANU or NUS.
To major in History, students need to:

- a maximum of two Level-5000 courses (subject to departmental approval)

- Students who wish to read more than 40 units of Level-4000 courses must seek departmental approval.
- To qualify for Honours track, students must have completed 110 units, including 60 units in the Major, with a GPA of 3.20 and above.

- All Level-4000 courses carry a general prerequisite of having completed 80 units, including 28 units in the Major, with a minimum GPA of 3.20 OR being on the Honours Track (some Level-4000 courses may have different prerequisites).

- Students may also read a Level-4000 Independent Studies Module (5 units). This Level-4000 ISM carries a prerequisite of 100 units completed, including 60 units in the Major, with a minimum GPA of 3.5. It precludes the Honours Thesis/Project.
- All Level-4000 courses carry a general prerequisite of having completed 80 units, including 28 units in the Major, with a minimum GPA of 3.5 OR being on the Honours Track (some Level-4000 courses may have different prerequisites).

Single Major (B.A.)

- (2) a maximum of 12 units of HY-recognised courses

- Students are allowed to read Level-4000 courses subject to departmental approval.
To major in History, students need to:

- Pass at least 44 units of HY modules or HY-recognised courses at which include the following:
- (1) a minimum of 20 units at level-3000 or higher

Pass at least 60 units of HY or HY-recognized courses, which include the following:
- HY1101E Asia and the Modern World
- a minimum of 24 units at Level-3000 or higher
Please take note:
- Students are allowed to read Level-4000 courses subject to departmental approval.
Second Major
Pass at least 40 units of HY modules or HY-recognised courses which include the following:
- HY1101E
- a minimum of 16 units at Level-3000 or higher
- a maximum of 8 units of HY-recognised courses
Notes:
- Students are allowed to read Level-4000 courses subject to department approval
- Change of Level-4000 courses from 5 units to 4 units for Cohort 2021 onwards is currently pending approval. More details will be provided at a later date
