Florin-Stefan Morar

Florin-Stefan Morar received his PhD from the History of Science Department at Harvard University in 2019 and subsequently held Assistant Professor positions at Lingnan University and the City University of Hong Kong. Dr. Morar’s research lies at the intersection of Global History, Science and Technology Studies, and Digital Humanities, examining how knowledge travels across cultures and evolves through technological change.

His first book, Connected Cartographies: World Geography and the Sino-Western Translation of Knowledge, 1580–1842 (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming 2025), draws on original archival sources in East Asian and European languages to explore encounters between Chinese and Western traditions of world geography and cartography. The book challenges conventional Age of Discovery narratives by highlighting the interconnectedness of the early modern world and its lasting impact on contemporary global relations. Building on this work, Dr. Morar is finishing a second book on globe-making and the globalization of knowledge, which uses microhistory to engage both scholarly and general audiences.

Dr. Morar is presently active in Digital Humanities research and the history of AI. He is working on organizing an interdisciplinary workshop on the societal implications of artificial intelligence and on a new monograph, tentatively titled Beyond Reason: Context, Globalization, and the History of Machine Learning. Through these projects, he aims to shed light on how cultural contexts and global networks have shaped our understanding of AI over time.
