Proposed Thesis Title: Tracing the Origin of the "Luri Monks" in the Arakan-Chittagong Buddhism: An Uncategorized Buddhist Sects of Pre-Colonial Indian Buddhism
Supervisor: Associate Professor Maitrii Aung-Thwin
I am Sulav Chakma, a Bangladeshi national and a self-proclaimed journeyman passionate about delving into history, particularly the History of Buddhism from the ethnographic and anthropological perspective. Having spent two years in India learning Buddhism and other Indian Philosophical Schools, I have become more curious about the historical chronology of Indian Buddhism within the South Asian setup.
At NUS, I look forward to enhancing my academic understanding of historical writings and historiography. My MA research aims to explore the genesis and evolution of Buddhism in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, the southeastern part of present-day Bangladesh. Through ethnographic investigation, much of my research focus intends to enquire on the less-known history of ‘Luri Monks’, an uncategorized Buddhist Sects of precolonial India in the Bengal-Burma frontier.
Apart from my academic pursuits, I love hiking and traveling. If not engaged in any task otherwise, I also do not mind spending time with a violin.
