GIS Data Processing and Management
*before GST. Full fees apply for this upcoming course run.
GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems. Using computer hardware and GIS software, we can display, query, analyse, and interpret geospatial data in visual ways, revealing patterns and relationships in the geographic world. GIS enables us to understand what has happened, what is happening, and what will happen in geographic space. Geospatial science has become increasingly important in developing solutions to global challenges such as sustainability, food security, healthcare management, and even rapid urbanisation, among others, particularly with advancements in technologies like satellite systems and GPS-enabled devices.
| Note: All new participants who wish to attain the Professional Certificate should follow the course sequence starting with the course, Introduction to GIS Basics and Data Visualization. This course is the second in the sequence. Participants should complete the programme within this upcoming cycle, as the curriculum will be revamped after the cycle completes in May 2027. All new participants should not extend their candidature period beyond one programme cycle.
The course may be rescheduled if the class enrollment does not meet the minimum of 15 participants. |
This short course covers the following components:
- Spatial Reference and Coordinate Systems
- Geometric Transformation
- Spatial Database, Spatial Information Digitisation, and Spatial Data Processing and Management
Objectives
Students will gain knowledge of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) data handling. They will gain skills for properly processing, preparing, using, and managing GIS data. These are the intermediate-level knowledge and skills demanded by the geospatial industry. This course will prepare students for learning deeper GIS topics and performing advanced industry-relevant GIS tasks such as spatial data analytics and spatial programming.
- Executives and professionals without a GIS background in both the private and public sectors
- People who aspire to pursue a geospatial career, such as Geospatial Executives, GIS Engineers, GIS Consultants, GIS Mapping Specialists, Geospatial Specialists, and Geospatial Policymakers
Diploma or Degree holders of any discipline, at least 1 year of working experience in the related sector is preferred; Candidates with other qualifications and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to approval by the Department.
It is recommended that learners have a basic understanding of the following topics, which are covered in the Introduction to GIS Basics and Data Visualization course offered as part of this Professional Certificate in Applied GIS. Learners who have not completed the GIS Basics and Data Visualization course but possess knowledge of the following topics may also consider attending this course:
- Introduction to GIS data, including the vector and raster data models
- GIS mapping and geovisualization methods using GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro
