Academic Prizes

Mr Ameerali Jumabhoy, Chairman of the Rajabali Jumabhoy Foundation has agreed to donate an expendable sum of S$25,000 for the award of ‘Rajabali Jumabhoy Foundation Prize in South Asian Studies’. The establishment of the award is contingent upon the foundation actually making the donation.

  1. A cash prize of S$500 will be awarded in each academic year to the best Honours graduate in South Asian Studies.
  2. The award will be given out starting from AY2009-10. The award is governed by the following conditions:
  3. Subject to rule 5 below, the prize will be awarded to:
    - the student, with the highest GPA, who has completed the South Asian Studies major programme for the degree of BA (Hons).
    - in case of a tie, the cash prize will be shared.
  4. The prize will be awarded by the FASS Board of Examiners on the recommendation of the Head of South Asian Studies Programme.
  5. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.


The department reserves the right to not award any prize if there are no candidates of sufficient merit. The decision of the selection committee is final. Enquiries or disputes surrounding its decisions will not be entertained. 

Donated in 1999 by the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI), the SICCI Performance Prize is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of S$15,000. From 1999 to 2011, the prize was known as the SICCI Gold Medal and a Medal was awarded to the best student who has graduated from SASP based on results from the Arts III Examination. In 2012, the prize was changed to a cash value of S$100 to the South Asian Studies major student with the highest SJGPA (subject grade point average) of all South Asian Studies courses (including recognized courses) throughout the candidate’s 4 years of study. With effect from AY2015/16, the prize will be categorized into three cash prizes valued at S$100 each. Each cash prize will be awarded to the best South Asian Studies major student in Year 2, 3 & 4. The prizes will be awarded annually as follows:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the cash prizes valued at S$100 each will be awarded to the South Asian Studies major student with the highest Subject Grade Point Average (SJGPA) of all South Asian Studies courses (including recognized courses) for the following examinations:
    a. Arts 2 for the Bachelor degree in FASS,
    b. Arts 3 for the Bachelor degree in FASS and
    c. Arts 4 for the degree of B.A. (Honours) in the FASS.
  2. In case of a tie, the Grade Point Average (GPA) will be used.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. The prizes will be awarded by the FASS Board of Examiners on the recommendation of the Head of South Asian Studies Programme.
  5. In the event of there being more than one candidate of equal merit for the award, FASS Board of Examiners on the recommendation of the Head of South Asian Studies Programme may, subject to funds being available, distribute the award or make additional awards in such manner as it deems fit.

In 2012, the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SICCI) agreed to donate an expendable sum of S$8000 per year for 3 years for the award of ‘SICCI Prize for South Asian Studies’. 

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the cash prizes will be awarded annually in the following categories:
    a. Honours Thesis (Best) - S$400
    The best honours thesis for the South Asian Studies Programme will be awarded a cash prize of S$400. The “best honours thesis” is the honours thesis with the highest mark. In case of a tie, two prizes of equal worth ($400 each) will be awarded if there are sufficient funds; otherwise, the single prize of S$400 will be shared equally.
    b. Graduate (Best MA Dissertation) – $600
    c. Graduate (Best PhD Dissertation) – $800
  2. There may be no graduate dissertations completed in a particular year. In the years where there are no graduate awardees, the funds for graduate prizes will be available for disbursement to deserving undergraduates. The prizes to deserving students for all categories will be awarded until the expendable funds are exhausted.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. The prizes will be awarded by the FASS Board of Examiners on the recommendation of the Head of South Asian Studies Programme.
  5. The South Asian Studies Programme will manage the award of the prizes and ensure that the total awards do not exceed $1800 per academic year.
  6. If, in any year, no award is made, the funds available will be carried forward to provide for awards in subsequent years.
