About ClaSIC

About CLaSIC

CLaSIC is a biennial conference, organized by the Centre for Language Studies (CLS) of the National University of Singapore (NUS), aims to bring together academics, researchers and professionals from Asia and beyond for a productive and rewarding exchange of insights, experiences, views and perspectives on current and future developments in foreign language teaching and learning. The conference serves a platform for participants to report on current research and practices in foreign language education and related disciplines. It will also provide an avenue for the discussion and critical examination of new and innovative concepts and approaches expected to have an impact on future practices.

The inaugural CLaSIC was held in December 2004 at the National University of Singapore and was a resounding success. The second and third CLaSIC in December 2006 and December 2008 respectively echoed the success of the first with around 180 participants from all over the world.

Feedback on the last three conferences:

- The committee has done a fantastic job and I've found all staff very helpful and generous. I particularly enjoyed the different areas covered in the parallel sessions from Teacher Education to ESL, or EFL plus the CALL component, very useful and enriching. (CLaSIC 2004)

- I truly enjoyed the sociability of this conference the chance to interact with a wide variety of professionals from diverse locations addressing different conditions & language. This diversity is one of the most attractive featured of CLaSIC, and will encourage me to return. (CLaSIC 2006)

Single room rates: $205 +++
Double room rates: $225 +++ .

All room rates are inclusive of breakfast and in-room broadband access. The rates quoted are in SINGAPORE DOLLARS and subject to 10% service charge & GST. (GST stands for Goods and Services Tax. Currently, Singapore's GST rate stands at 7 %.)

Social Programme

The ClaSIC 2010 Organising Committee has planned an attractive and varied social programme for the conference participants. Social activities include the official conference dinner on 3 December 2010 at theKent Ridge Guild Houseand a half-day tour to the Peranakan Museum, the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserveand One Raffles Quay (Marina Bay Sands Resort)on 4 December 2010.
There are no charges for all registrants to participate in the tour and official conference dinner.We would appreciate it greatly if you could inform us by 18 November 2010 of your interest in participating in the official conference dinner and the tour by sending an email to .

14:15 hrs	Meet at the Orchard Hotel Lobby. Heading to the Peranakan Museum.
14:30 hrs	Arrival at the Peranakan Museum. The Peranakan Museum explores the culture of Peranakancommunitiesin the former Straits Settlements of Singapore, Malacca and Penang and their links with other communities in Southeast Asia. It is a boutique museum with one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of Peranakan artefacts in the world. ( “Peranakan” is a term used for the descendants of late 15th and 16th-century Chinese immigrants to the Nusantara region.) https://www.nhb.gov.sg/peranakanmuseum/
15:15 hrs	Depart from the Peranakan Museum. Heading to the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve.
16:00 hrs	Arrive at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. The Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, with an area of 130 hectares, is a nature reserve located in the Northwest area of Singapore. Its global importance as a stop-over point for migratory birds was recognised by the Wetlands International's inclusion of the reserve into the East Asian Australasian Shorebird Site Network http://www.sbwr.org.sg/
17:45 hrs	Depart from the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. Heading to One Raffles Quay / (Marina Bay Sands Resort).
18:30 hrs	Arrive at One Raffles Quay / (Marina Bay Sands Resort). The Marina Bay Sands Resort, designed by a leading architect Moshe Safdie who based it on a deck of cards, integrates the waterfront promenade with the retail arcade combining civic space, shopping, indoor and outdoor spaces endowed with city skyline views, daylight and plant life. http://www.marinabaysands.com/
20:30 hrs	Bus returns to the Orchard Hotel. * Guests who wish to stay on to explore the night life around Marina Bay Sands Resort are advised to arrange their own transportation back to the hotel (e.g. by taxi or MRT).*

Weather
Average temperature is about 30 - 32 Degree Celsius, and most of the time you will have sunshine. It usually rains in December so it is advisable to bring along an umbrella.

Clothing
As Singapore is a humid country, it is advisable to bring light clothing. It is not considered rude if you do not wear a coat and wearing your normal working attire is considered proper.
