Assistant Manager / Manager (Geographic Information Systems)

The Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is inviting applications for an Assistant Manager / Manager in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to provide support to the GIS Unit and its GIS educational programmes.

The GIS Unit spearheads the research, training and applications of GIS in the Department and aims to extend beyond the academic realm to foster an Asia-focused GIS ecosystem with global reach. The Department is the leading centre in Singapore for GIS research and teaching, hosting comprehensive geospatial and other laboratory facilities. It currently runs four GIS educational programmes at undergraduate and graduate levels based upon a diverse range of courses; the MSc in Applied GIS at the graduate level and the GIS Minor at the undergraduate level, and the Graduate Certificate in Applied GIS and Professional Certificate in Applied GIS for Continuing Education and Training. Plans are also underway to complement the existing programmes with a Graduate Diploma in Applied GIS (thereby creating a fully-stackable MSc degree in Applied GIS) and an undergraduate cross-disciplinary degree in computational geosciences.

The position is for two years in the first instance with the possibility of extension subject to performance.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The person appointed will be expected to cover the following duties and responsibilities:

1) Administrative & admission coordinator for the GIS programmes

  • Handling day-to-day programme administration.
  • Assisting in reviewing and processing applications from prospective students.
  • Coordinating students’ theses & projects-related activities/tasks for the MSc programme.

2) GIS/Computer lab management

  • Run the day-to-day operations of the GIS/Computer labs and related facilities.
  • Purchase and manage GIS & remote sensing software licenses used in the Department.

3) GIS outreach

  • Develop and help organise training programmes in collaboration with faculty members within the Department and across NUS to facilitate GIS outreach to working professionals and the public.
  • Assist in annual open houses and other initiatives aimed at student recruitment.

4) Technical and knowledge support in GIS

  • Assist students, research staff and faculty in developing and analysing geospatial data for teaching, training and research.
  • Support the implementation of advanced analysis and presentation tools from GIS and remote sensing software.
  • Support new course development.

Qualification and experience

The following are required:

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject from a reputable institution
  • High level of written and oral communication skills
  • Analytical, meticulous, well-organised and able to multi-task
  • Able to work independently and as a team player
  • IT savvy, with good knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications
  • Proficiency with GIS / remote sensing software

The following are desirable:

  • Previous working experience in a relevant area, such as computer laboratory management, administering and marketing academic programmes in tertiary institutions
  • A Master’s degree in a relevant subject from a reputable institution
