Graduate Research Workshop
The annual Geography Graduate Research Workshop marks the cumulation of the Graduate Research Seminar (GRS) module, which all first-year Masters and PhD candidates are required to complete. It is an excellent opportunity for graduate students to hone their presentation skills, obtain constructively critical feedback for their proposed research projects, and make their research interests known to the wider research community.
The Graduate Research Workshop, held on April 26, 2024 brought together a diverse group of graduate students and faculty members from various academic and national backgrounds. The workshop’s theme, “Worlds of Repairs,” aimed to foster conversations and encourage collaboration across subdisciplines. To encourage this, breaks were allocated between sessions to allow presenters to engage with attendees, colleagues and faculty members.
The Workshop was thoughtfully structured around five sub-themes: 1) Unravelling Sociotechnical Worlds; 2) Sustainable Development and Health Dynamics; 3) Tropical Forests and Croplands; 4) Wetland Science and Governance; and 5) Reef Accretion, Restoration, and Island Dynamics. These sub-themes were designed to be fluid and inclusive, inviting presenters and attendees to explore beyond the subjects of individual presentations and draw inspiration from each other. The interdisciplinary flow of the Workshop provided an excellent platform for students to present their research ideas, receive constructive feedback, and connect with the Department’s research community. Each subtheme session included a combined Question and Answer segment, which encouraged presenters to explore their research from different perspectives. Overall, the Graduate Research Workshop was a successful event, facilitating an enriching exchange of ideas and strengthening interdisciplinary ties within the Department.
