The annual Geography Graduate Research Workshop marks the cumulation of the Graduate Research Seminar (GRS) module, a common course for all first-year Masters and PhD candidates. It is an excellent opportunity for graduate students to hone their presentation skills, obtain constructively critical feedback for their proposed research projects, and make their research interests known to the wider research community.

The Graduate Research Workshop, held on April 25, 2025 brought together a diverse group of graduate students and faculty members from various academic and national backgrounds. The workshop’s theme, “A World in Transition,” evoked the common ethos across diverse subdisciplines to bridge conversations and spark collaborations. During session breaks, presenters also had the chance to continue engaging with attendees, colleagues and faculty members.

The Workshop was thematically structured in four clusters: 1) Climate Change and Resilience; 2) Matters of Governance; 3) Coastal Systems and Geomorphology; 4) Mobilizing Identities. One cluster consisted of three to four presentations, each followed by an enriching Question and Answer session. The thematic clusters were designed to be fluid and inclusive, encouraging all graduate researchers to explore their research from different perspectives and engage with constructive feedback. The day-long workshop started with an opening address by Prof. David Taylor, the Head of Department, and closed with remarks by Prof. Tim Bunnell, the lecturer of the Graduate Research Seminar. Together, the Graduate Research Workshop was a success in creating synergies among the variegated subfields of geography and bringing together the Department’s research community.
