About GeogSoc
The NUS Geographical Society is a non-profit organisation dedicated to serving the needs, welfare and aspirations of students of Geography in NUS; in maintaining a strong and close relationship between the student community and faculty at the Department of Geography; and in promoting the discipline of Geography amongst the Singaporean student community.
The Society enjoys a long history and tradition of close ties with the Department, extending back to the days of the former University of Singapore. Today, the Geog Soc (pronounced “JEOG-SOCK”), as it is affectionately referred to, still serves as the umbrella body under which students reading Geography can find both academic and social support. This is achieved through the numerous activities organised throughout the year.
The Society’s Logo
The logo captures the dynamism and vibrancy of the Society.
The sunflower is used as a metonym for the environment, reflecting the essence of geography. The striking stylised image of the sunflower also captures the spirit of geographic concern with human-environment relationships.
The outreaching petals of the flower are representative of students’ quest for greater knowledge as well as the Society’s bid to reach out to all students.
60th Management Committee
The 60th Management Committee (MC) seeks to serve the NUS Geography community under the motto “Arbor”.
The motto “Arbor” derives from the Latin word for “tree”, symbolising rootedness, growth, and shelter. Just as trees stand firmly rooted while continuing to branch outwards and upwards, the 60th MC aspires to remain grounded in the society’s 60 year legacy, while reaching upwards for new opportunities and growth. “Arbor” embodies the idea of remaining rooted in history, cultivating growth, and creating shelter for our community, both for society members and the Geographical community at large.
The motto “Arbor” represents the three core missions of the 60th, which together embody our role as the “Arbor” of the community.
The first mission: “Rooted in legacy, nourished by the past.”
Like the roots of a tree anchoring it to the earth, the 60th Management Committee begins its journey grounded in the memory and accomplishments of the past 59 committees. Our roots represent the foundations of dedication, commitment, and resilience that the previous members have laid. They remind us to remain connected to our shared history and to draw inspiration and nourishment from the values of those who came before us, ensuring that the society’s growth remains steady and sustainable.
The second mission: “Branching outwards, strengthened together.”
Like branches that weather wind and storm yet continue to grow into the unknown, the 60th MC will inevitably face trials throughout our term. These challenges, however, are not setbacks but opportunities, moments where we go beyond our comfort zones, learn resilience, and discover new strengths within ourselves and with one another. Just as branches of a tree are interconnected, we as the 60th MC will continue to support, uplift, and grow with one another, fostering bonds that will extend across the NUS Geography community. Through these shared experiences, we hope to emerge stronger, more united, and prepared to carry our community forward for another sixty years.
The third mission: “Sheltering growth, fostering community.”
The canopy of a tree offers shade and protection to all beneath it, creating a space for life to thrive. Similarly, the 60th MC aims to provide a supportive and nurturing environment for our members and the wider Geography community. Beyond individual growth, we seek to foster bonds of friendship, unity, and shared purpose. By the end of our term, when this “Arbor” has grown taller and stronger, we hope to have left behind a legacy of shelter and belonging, one that future generations of Geographers can continue to thrive on.
During our term, the 60th Management Committee pledges to serve the NUS Geography community with dedication and to carry out our responsibilities in the Society with commitment and care.

Geog Challenge
The Geography Challenge is an annual Geography Competition organised by NUS Geographical Society, the NUS Geography Department, and held in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to challenge and pique the interest of secondary school students. It aims to ignite the passion of secondary school students to engage geography in their everyday lives through interactive components that involve both academic and non-academic elements to stimulate their creativity.
NUS Geographers get the chance to develop themes, question papers, and even chart the direction of designated components. If you are someone who likes hands-on activities, Geography majors can also take on the opportunity to execute the event itself as well. Look forward to taking part in the Geography Challenge for a chance to engage, empower and educate students!
2025 Geography Challenge
"Little Red Dot: Leveraging our Land" was the theme for Geography Challenge 2025!
Events
Majors' Welfare Events
Geography Welcome Tea
The Welcome Tea is an event specially curated for potential Geography majors and is usually held in early August right after the first GE1101E lecture. At the Welcome Tea, there will be an opening address by the Head of Department to officially welcome you to the Geography department, the introduction to the Geography Department, followed by a short presentation by Geogsoc. At this event, first year students can take the chance to clarify doubts with regards to the Geography curriculum, modules offered and certain administrative affairs. The event will then be followed by a networking session, which allows freshers to interact with professors and seniors in the department over some delicious food and drinks!
Majors' Tea
Majors’ Tea is a flagship event held in the first semester of every academic year, specially catered to all Geography majors. The event brings together Geography majors and faculty members from the Department of Geography for a networking session over food and drinks.
Majors’ Tea provides a unique opportunity for students to engage with faculty members in an informal setting, where they can discuss a wide range of topics such as university life, academic matters, and career pathways. More than just a networking event, it also serves to strengthen the bonds within the Geography community, fostering meaningful connections beyond the classroom.

Career Day
Career Day is a newly introduced event jointly organised by the Department of Geography and the NUS Geographical Society, held in the second semester of every academic year. It serves as a dedicated platform to showcase the diverse career pathways that a Geography degree can lead to, highlighting the versatility and relevance of geographical knowledge and skills in today’s world.
At Career Day, professionals from across the public and private sectors are invited to share their experiences and insights, demonstrating how their backgrounds in Geography have shaped and supported their career journeys. Through panel discussions, talks, and interactive sessions, students are able to learn firsthand how Geography can be applied across industries such as urban planning, sustainability, environmental management, policy, research, business, and beyond.
The event also offers meaningful opportunities for networking, allowing participants to engage directly with speakers, ask questions, and build connections that may inform their own career aspirations. By bringing together students, alumni, and industry professionals, Career Day bridges the gap between academic study and professional practice, inspiring majors and non-majors alike to envision the wide-ranging opportunities available to them.
Open to both NUS Undergraduates and Junior College students, Career Day reinforces the broad value of a Geography education and underscores its contribution to solving complex, real-world challenges.
Special Projects Events
Field Trips
Special Projects Cell organises Field Trips during Winter and Summer Breaks. These Field Trips bring Geographers out into the field to broaden our horizons and experience Geography beyond the 4 walls. Our most recent Field Trips brought Geographers on a self-directed walking tour to explore the mature Dakota Cassia neighbourhood with A/P Dr Kamalini Ramdas, and a guided tour of the National Stadium to discover Singapore’s growing sporting landscapes and the Stadium’s transformations under the Kallang Alive Masterplan.
