Publicising Your Experiments

The following outlets can be used to publicise your study:

  1. Studies tapping the research participant pool should use the SONA system, which can be accessed at https://nus.sona-systems.com/.
  2. Experimenters who are recruiting paid participants can make use of the following web-based resources:

Rules and Regulations

1. Researchers who have booked room facilities or reserved departmental equipment must ensure that the rooms and equipment are fully utilised during the time that they have reserved them.

2. Staff and student researchers can book these rooms. Researchers can book a maximum of 3 cubicles. The cubicles can be used for 2 hours at a time (the booking is renewable every 2 hours if it is available).

3. Students who are found to be using the rooms without booking may be denied future access.

4. Users of the rooms should not allow unauthorised personnel (e.g. non-PL majors) into the rooms.

5. Users of the rooms should refrain from eating and drinking in the rooms as the food and liquid may damage the computers.

6. Users of the rooms are to turn off all equipment, lights and air-conditioners, and remove all their belongings before they leave the rooms.

7. Should it be found that the users of the rooms have not been taking proper care of the equipment and facilities or have been allowing unauthorised personnel to access the rooms, their privilege of accessing the rooms will be revoked.

Making Reservations

Rooms and equipment are loaned to staff and student researchers on a first-come-first-served basis and are subject to availability. First priority for the Computer Labs is given to timetabled classes. The use of rooms and equipment for teaching purposes also precede their use for research purposes.

The rooms and equipment listed above for loan can be reserved through Mr Edward Chia (edward.c@nus.edu.sg) at least 3 working days in advance. Researchers could check for the availability of rooms by clicking on the rooms below before making any reservation. Students who are found to be using the rooms without booking may be denied future access.

Undergraduate students need to produce IRB/DERC documentation or an authorisation email from their project supervisor to reserve rooms and/or equipment for their research projects.

Cancelling Reservations

In the event that researchers anticipate not using a room or a piece of equipment that they have booked, they MUST cancel the booking at least 3 working days in advance. For example, a reservation for a room or the loan of a video-camera on Monday which will not be used on the day, has to been cancelled by Tuesday of the previous week.

Researchers who fail to cancel their unused room bookings or equipment reservations will be subjected to a penalty of not having access to room bookings for ONE week per 1-hour booking not honoured. This penalty applies to specified timeslots, not just days.

The 3-day advance notification is the minimum time required for other researchers in need of rooms to make suitable arrangements. Giving up the rooms at the last minute is effectively the same as booking the rooms but not using them, which deprives others in need of rooms.

Scanning Your Storage Devices

Researchers are reminded to regularly scan their storage devices (USB thumb drives, external hard drives) particularly before using them on computers in the Computer Labs and Cubicles.

Backing Up Your Data

All computers in the Computer Labs and the Cubicles are updated and all data in their respective hard drives are cleared at regular intervals throughout the year. All researchers are responsible for storing their data on removable storage devices and for backing up their data on other media.

Observing the Rules

Students who do not observe the rules and regulations governing the booking system will receive appropriate censure, and abuse of the booking system will be made known to project supervisors and undergraduate level coordinators.
