Industry Tracks: FASS 2.0

Frequently-Asked Questions

The programme is applicable to FASS students matriculated in AY2019/2020 onwards, and are pursuing one of the following degrees:

  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of Arts (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Environmental Studies (Honours) (Environmental Geography specialisation)

While this programme is not compulsory, we anticipate it will be an attractive option for career-focused students.

It offers a career pathway for students to select one of 5 curated “Industry Tracks” which are generally aligned to the main employer industries for FASS graduates. Each track consists of a curated list of FASS majors, complemented by a combination of hard skills courses.

The aim is to help students curate courses with job sectors in mind, thereby building up their repertoire of hard and soft skills that are essential to thrive and succeed in the chosen field.

Upon completing the programme, students should be able to articulate the relevance of their major to the industry, and highlight the industry-related skills, exposure and experience gained to the hiring organisations. The preparation will put them in good stead during the job application stage.

You need not have to sign up for the programme.

Rather, once you have fulfilled all the requirements, you are required to complete and submit an online form, at least one semester before graduation, in order to receive the track-specific certificate.

There is no set quota on the number of students who can pursue a particular track. You are allowed to select and pursue one of the five tracks, based on your career aspiration.

We do recommend taking certain courses in a particular year of study, in view of the pre-requisites you have to fulfil. The ideal timeline is to complete  all the requirements, by the end of your third year (based on a four-year study plan).

You may refer to our career preparation roadmap to help with your planning.

Upon fulfilling all the requirements, please complete and submit this online form, at least one semester before graduation, in order to receive the track-specific certificate when you graduate.

The credit bearing courses in the programme will be reflected in the transcript respectively. In addition, students who have completed the requirements for an industry track, will receive a track-specific certificate from FASS when they graduate.

Do note that each track consists of a curated list of FASS majors, hard skills courses and industry relevant training needed to optimize your career fit with the defined sector. They include:

• Cross-discipline ‘hard skill’ courses instruction
• Focused industry seminars
• Active internships in industry of choice
• Mentoring by industry leaders and professionals

With the exception of the FASS Industry Seminar, the rest of the components are closely tied to the selected track. A midway switch may result in your training and experience gained, less relevant to the chosen industry.

Therefore, it is important for you to start planning in your first year. You may refer to the career preparation roadmap, for more details on how you could navigate the journey.

Yes, you can. You may do so, as long as you have fulfilled the respective pre-requisites. That said, for some courses like FAS3551 Capstone Career Preparation, we may need to give priority to those who need to fulfil this course to complete the track.

Do note that we will not be able to issue the track-specific certificate to you, if you did not fulfil all the requirements.

In addition to the graduate employment statistics, the Faculty has also consulted various internal stakeholders, industry partners and FASS alumni, to identify the five growing industries which have the greatest employability opportunities for FASS graduates. They are among those that have historically employed significant numbers of our students.
