More-than-climate politics in rurality: Normative pathways for living with loss

Adaptation debates on reparative future and inclusive governance demand grounded engagements with the many ways in which local values and concerns, systemic disadvantage, and lived experiences with climatic hazards are entangled. This entails examining temporalities of loss, grief, and hope while also exploring spaces for deliberative processes and normative pathways toward transformative change. Here, I assess values- and place-based adaptation pathway planning as a relational complement to state-driven climate risk assessments and resilience imperatives. I investigate how residents in Western Australia engage in difficult trade-offs to decide what to save and what to let go against the backdrop of increasing fires, drought, and heat.

Petra Tschakert, Professor of Geography at NUS, is trained as a human-environment geographer and applied anthropologist. Her research is on climate change adaptation and everyday limits, structural and intersectional inequalities, and loss, grief, and hope, drawing from scholarship grounded in political ecology, feminist methodologies, and social, climate, and energy justice.
