General Education (GE) Requirements for FASS Students (Cohort 2020 and Before)
##: NUS will adopt three new academic terminologies from 1 August 2023 - “Module” will be renamed “Course”, “Modular Credit (MC)” will be renamed “Unit”, and “Cumulative Average Point (CAP)” will be renamed “Grade Point Average (GPA)”. The definition of a Module/Course and MC/Unit will remain the same, and there will be no change to the computation of the CAP/GPA.
A. Details
General Education (GE) is a University-level requirement. The five pillars that form General Education are Human Cultures, Thinking and Expression, Singapore Studies, Asking Questions, and Quantitative Reasoning.
All NUS undergraduate students have to fulfil 20 Modular Credits (MCs) of GE requirements. This is equivalent to five modules, and students are to read one module from each pillar, ideally within the first two years of your candidature.

C. Computational Thinking (CT) Requirement for FASS students
Computational Thinking (CT) is an important 21st century skillset for solving complex problems. Students learn to apply CT to understand and solve problems within and across disciplines, leveraging CT to ask new questions, formulate new problems, and develop new solutions.
Graduation Requirement
Computational Thinking (CT) is a graduation requirement for NUS students of Cohort 2017 onwards. The CT module identified for FASS and BES students are:

4. DDP students (with FASS as 1st Home Faculty) | You are not required to read GET1031A or GET1050 as you would have read a higher-order CT module† in the partner Faculties as part of your DDP requirements. | In the event that you exit from the DDP without having already read the higher-order CT module, you would need to read GET1031A* or GET1050 to graduate. |

*GET1031A will no longer be offered with effect from Semester 1 of AY2019-20. As such, for Cohort 2019 onwards, GET1050 effectively replaces GET1031A. FASS and BES students from Cohort 2017 and 2018 who have not taken GET1031A will be pre-allocated GET1050 instead. Students who have already read and passed GET1031A do not need to read GET1050.
†The higher-order CT modules include: UTC17x, CS1010x, CS1101x, COS2000, CM3267, PF1103, ID2116, AR2524, RE2708, DAO2702, EE2028, IT1007, ESP2107, and MLE1001. Any student who have read and passed any of these modules will not be required to read GET1031A or GET1050 (applicable to non-DDP students as well).
D. Information on GET1050
From Semester 1, AY2019/20, FASS and BES students will be pre-allocated the module GET1050 Computational Reasoning to fulfil the CT requirement.
Module Registration and Specifics
Pre-allocation of module
GET1050 will be randomly pre-allocated to students between their 2nd and 4th semester of study. By the end of your second year of study, you should have completed your CT requirement.
Tutorial registration
Please note that when you are allocated the module, you have to register for your preferred tutorial session on Mod Reg.
S/U option
You are allowed to exercise the S/U option on this module, depending on your remaining modular credits available for exercising the S/U option.
Module Exemptions for GET1050
If you have read the following modules, you would have fulfilled the CT requirement. However, please note that these modules do not concurrently fulfil the General Education (GE) ‘Thinking and Expression’ pillar requirement. If you use any of the following modules to fulfil the CT requirement, you would have to take a separate GET-coded module to fulfil the GE ‘Thinking and Expression’ pillar.

Pre-allocation of the module and appeals are handled by get1050@nus.edu.sg.
Please note that all students who are due for GET1050 pre-allocation any time between the 2nd and 4th semester of study will have to abide by the random pre-allocation and read the module in the relevant semester.
