Hormonal Contraceptive Use and Women’s Economic Decision-Making

Hormonal contraceptives have transformed women’s ability to make reproductive choices. Despite their societal advantages, the impact of hormonal contraceptives on economic decision-making remains less understood. In this talk, I will present findings from: a) archival data examining the direct relationship between hormonal contraceptive use and competitive, economic decision-making, and b) experimental research examining the extent to which social, achievement-based stress affects this relationship. Together, this work highlights how and under what circumstances reproductive health choices may be linked with women’s economic decision-making.

Smrithi Prasad is an Assistant Professor in Psychology. Her research lies at the intersection of social psychology and behavioral endocrinology. Specifically, she is interested in studying how psychological and biological processes influence the quality of decisions we make in stressful and competitive contexts.
