Work-in-Progress Sharing Session: Embodied, Transcultural, and Participatory Pedagogies

On 22 October, the FASS Critical Education Research Cluster hosted a Work-in-Progress Sharing Session where scholars working in the fields of Sociology, World Literature, and Geography presented their research on how pedagogical practice can be reimagined as a site of critical and transformative inquiry. Ali Kassem (Sociology and Anthropology) opened by discussing his project Embodied Knowing in Singapore, an exploration of sensorial and affective learning in the university classroom. Tania Roy (English, Linguistics and Theatre Studies) and Ayelet Ben-Yishai (Haifa University) followed with The Transcultural Classroom, examining how collaborative teaching across institutions can unsettle conventional models of world literature and reframe the classroom as a space of transcultural exchange. Tan Qian Hui (Asia Research Institute) concluded with Reflections on the Blurred Lines between Research and Pedagogy, showing how community-based circular waste practices function as forms of environmental education and participatory and pedagogical action research. The session concluded with a discussion amongst all session attendees on assessment strategies and classroom scale in fostering transformative learning, underscoring shared commitments to critical, reflexive, and participatory approaches to education.
