SUSAN OWEN
I am an environmental policy researcher and educator, who works with physical and social science research to better understand the limitations in environmental management practice. With a focus on climate adaptation policy in the context of environmental and human systems, I am interested in how we respond to the complex, and at times seemingly intractable, issues faced when developing policy to support sectoral adaptation to climate change. While my research focus has been driven by a curiosity about the mismatches between science, policy and perception, particularly when faced with questions about adaptation to slow onset environmental change, my work has also intersected with adaptation questions across a range of sectoral areas, including flood risk, biodiversity, marine economies and renewable energy.
I have held several positions of responsibility in an academic context, including two graduate advising roles (PGDipSci/MSc in Environmental Management at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and the MSc in Ecological Restoration at Simon Fraser University, Canada). I was also the Associate Dean (Postgraduate) for the Faculty of Science, at the University of Auckland.
