Introduction to GIS Basics and Data Visualisation

Note: Short courses that are scheduled to take place from 1 October 2024 onwards will open for registration in mid-August on our brand new application portal. Please register here to be notified once this course is ready to accept your application!

GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems. Using computer hardware and GIS software, we can display, query, analyse, and interpret geospatial data in visual ways, revealing patterns and relationships in the geographic world. GIS enables us to understand what has happened, what is happening, and what will happen in geographic space. Geospatial science has become increasingly important in developing solutions to global challenges such as sustainability, food security, healthcare management, and even rapid urbanisation, among others, particularly with advancements in technologies like satellite systems and GPS-enabled devices.

What You Will Learn

This short course covers the following components:

  1. Background on the development of GIS and its applications in different fields
  2. Introduction to GIS data, including the vector data model and raster data model
  3. GIS mapping and geovisualisation methods using GIS software

Objectives

Students will gain basic knowledge of GIS data models and skills in GIS mapping using common GIS software from this course. These are the entry-level knowledge and skills demanded by the geospatial industry. This course will prepare students for learning deeper topics in GIS and performing industry-relevant GIS tasks at intermediate to advanced levels, such as GIS data handling, GIS database management, and spatial data analytics.

Who Will Benefit

  • Executives and professionals without a GIS background in both the private and public sectors
  • People who aspire to pursue a geospatial career, such as Geospatial Executives, GIS Engineers, GIS Consultants, GIS Mapping Specialists, Geospatial Specialists, and Geospatial Policymakers

Entry Requirements

Diploma or degree holders of any discipline, with at least 1 year of working experience in the related sector preferred.
